Opening of the Sutherland AR/VR Studio at Harvard Innovation Labs

Today the Harvard AR/VR Student Alliance joined the Harvard Innovation Labs in opening its brand new AR/VR Studio. The lab is open to Harvard students and will open up new possibilities for exploration and development with AR tech (Microsoft Hololens), VR tech (Google Daydream, HTC, Vive, Oculus Rift, Samsung Gear, Sony Playstation VR), and 360 cameras. The Innovation Labs' mission of helping companies move "further, faster" has now ventured into this exciting space of AR/VR and the Alliance is moving further and faster along to help support this momentum on campus!

Harvard team wins runner-up prize at MIT Hacking Arts

A group of Harvard VR enthusiasts consisted of current students from Harvard Graduate School of Design (Qi Xiong, Jiabao Li, Jingchen Gao), Harvard Divinity School (Tim Gallati), and Harvard Business School (Luna Yuan) participated in the Hacking Arts 2016 at MIT Media Lab and won the first runner up. In less than 16 hours, they built a system that integrates virtual reality, tactile feedback, and music to teach Tai Chi. The system provides visual cues through a virtual reality environment so that a user knows how to move, and gets feedback on whether their move is correct. The system serves to illustrate the abstract concept of ‘Chi,’ or flow of energy, through interaction-based visual effects. It also provides tactile feedback to drive the user’s movements. For more information, see reports from TechCrunch and Boston Magazine.

On 10/23/2016, a few of us volunteered at Harvard Visualization and Teaching Lab to help our club advisor, Rus Gant, introduce VR to Harvard alumni. For many of them, it was their first time experiencing VR and they were immediately blown away. Some suggested that we should expand the Harvard AR/VR Student Alliance to the alumni group so more alumni could be better informed of this revolutionary technology!
